July 9, 2020: A lot of people seem to think there is not ample room to adore Michaela Coel in tandem with, rather than instead of, Phoebe Waller-Bridge. What scarce imaginations at work. I'm hoping to be so lucky as to see Coel live one day, as I did Waller-Bridge, which was basically a masterclass in benign charisma. Coel's speeches land so hard over a screen, the idea of sharing space is totally titillating. What an excellent and precious creative role model, who excites me all the more for being slightly younger than I am. I am never, ever going to negotiate anything again without keeping her in mind. Please watch her speech from the 2018 Edinburgh TV Festival, and read E. Alex Jung's profile in New York magazine. It is telling that I could not wait for "I May Destroy You" to finish out its season before writing her. (Photograph by Ruth Ossai)
