January 23, 2021: I have still not watched all of "Pretend It's A City," but I've had an unabiding love for Fran Lebowitz since what might be argued was an inappropriately young age, a common phenomenon, I think, for those with older siblings and enthusiastically literate parents. What prompted me to write her, finally, was a New York Times piece a friend sent me comparing her, disparagingly, to John Wilson, a friend whose show I worked on. To compare a queer woman to a straight man is a weak shot, and somehow having a personal icon compared to a personal friend made me crazy. The natural antidote felt like throwing some love her way.
