September 4, 2020: I'm considering making my minivan for my home a while, and finally living a longstanding dream of being a wild woman on the road with a camera. This has me thinking about female photographers I love, alongside the idea of cultivating a brave life. Catherine Opie fits both bills. Like many people I'm most enamored by, Opie dedicates herself to helping people who are too rarely celebrated feel seen. She has also, consistently, since the early 90s, expanded a lot of people's sense of the possible - not least of all by being a pregnant, nursing butch. She has an actual, physical, human son; I'll never have kids but I'm pouring real energy into thinking about what I most want to mother in the world. (Self-Portrait/Nursing, 2004)
